Things To Know For The 2022 Mini Season

Hello Westside 8 Ball League!

We are finally ready to get back to playing pool.  Our 2022 mini season will start March 1st & 2nd and run 9 weeks on Tuesday/7 weeks on Wednesday.  We will qualify for BCA and get back into the swing of things and be ready for a full 2022-2023 season to start at our normal time in September 2022.

Here are some important notes.  Please read them all, it’s all important info!

Due to the shortened season, we are cutting the team registration fee from $80 to $40 for this season only.  This does not include the BCA Registration fee which is $20 per player.  As such, Week 1 Dues are $40 per player, which includes $10 in registration, $10 in weekly dues, and $20 for BCA registration.  All subsequent weeks of play require $10 in weekly dues per player.

We will try to be as COVID safe as possible.  We will have a zero tolerance policy for any sort of COVID shaming.  Bars will be following local guidelines, but if mask mandates are lifted and someone wants to wear a mask, let them.  If they don’t want to shake your hand, it’s not bad sportsmanship, let them be.  Please do not harass anyone for their safety choices.  Erring on the side of caution doesn’t adversely effect anyone else.

As of right now, 90 west is the only scoresheet dropoff location.  We are trying to secure a second location, so watch for updates.  Scoresheets MUST be turned in on the night of play. Reminder that the visiting team is responsible for turning in both scoresheets, and BOTH teams are responsible for making sure that an image of the scoresheet is sent to Mike Schwartz as soon as the match is finished.  We’d rather have both teams send an image than neither, so after the match, as you’re both signing the sheets and turning in the money, get that picture taken and sent immediately.

Please look over the schedule and make sure there aren’t any oddities.  Each team should play every other team one time.

The officers are also cutting their stipend in half for this season so that more money goes to the prize pool at the end, even though Pete and Angela have arguably worked harder this season to make the league happen than ever before.  The only extra cost is the website hosting fees that Mike Schwartz has been paying the entire pandemic, but we will work out the numbers and probably put those fees off until next season so that the prize pool isn’t heavily affected.

We are looking forward to a fun season and a chance to play pool again after all this time, so be good spots and enjoy yourselves!

End of Season Event & Tournament Results

Congratulations go out to the following for placing in our Scotch Doubles Tournament:

The following rule changes were voted in and have been updated in the 2019-2020 Rules.
Timeouts:
27. As of the 2019-2020 season, the active shooter or any of the shooter’s teammates may call a foul.  “Teammate” is defined as one of the players designated on the scoresheet on the night of play.  It is still good procedure to ask an opponent if a shot was a foul if the shooter is unclear, and even better procedure to ask players from BOTH teams to watch a questionable shot before the shot is taken.
Rack Your Own:
As of the 2019-2020 season, the breaker of each game pays for the game and racks their own balls.  There is no longer the option to rack your own or have your opponent rack.
Maximum Fine Removed (all references to maximum fine removed in dropoff section of rules):
13. “Gabe’s” and “90 West” are the designated “Drop off’ points, for the 2019-2020 season, for score sheets and fees. Visiting team captains are responsible for dropping off the completed score sheets and fees on the night of the match by the closing time of the drop off point.  Fees need not be paid for “bye” matches.
Accidentally Moving Multiple Balls (plural language changed to singular):
It is not a foul to accidentally touch a single stationary object ball while in the act of shooting. If such an accident occurs, the player must allow the opponent the option to leave the touched ball in its new position or to restore the object ball to what he believes to be its correct position. If the player accidentally moves a ball as part of a shot, and a ball set in motion as a normal part of the shot touches such an unrestored ball, or passes partly into a region originally occupied by a disturbed ball, the shot is a foul. In short, if the accident has any effect on the outcome of the shot, it is a foul. It is a foul to play another shot before the opponent has either elected to leave the table in position or to restore any accidentally moved balls. If the opponent elects to leave the table in position the balls are considered restored, and subsequent contact on them is not a foul. It is still a foul to make any contact with the cue ball whatsoever while it is in play, except for the normal tip-to-ball contact during a shot.  If multiple object balls are moved accidentally via the stick, body, or any other illegal surface, even in the act of shooting, this is a ball in hand foul.
Note that a player who accidentally touches a stationary ball and restores it has committed a foul. This is considered deliberately touching balls in play.  The player must instead ask his opponent if he wants the ball’s position restored and wait for an answer.
New Team Designation to Teams Delinquent Over $100 (added last line):
17. New teams to the league which consists of three or more new players to the league will be required to pay $20 per week for dues during the first half of the season. The new teams will not have to pay any dues during the second half of the season since their team has already paid for the second half of the season. This rule is necessary since some new teams drop out in the second half of the season. Team drop outs have an adverse effect on team standings & financial structure of the league. The Grievance Committee will determine new team status and any other pay structure for new teams on a case-by-case basis.  Any team which was delinquent more than $100 at any time during the previous season will be designated a new team for the subsequent season.
Obvious 8 Balls No Longer Need to be Called (removed language necessitating calling all 8 balls)
Failing to make a legal hit while shooting at the 8-ball or sinking the cue ball results in ball in hand to the opponent, unless the 8-ball is pocketed in the process, when the shooter would lose.  As of the 2019-2020 season, calling the 8 ball is no longer necessary for obvious shots.  An obvious shot, as defined in section 10 of these rules, does not include kicks, caroms or combinations.  As with any shot, if an opponent is unclear about the shooters intended pocket, they may ask, while still following the rules of sportsmanship and etiquette.

Website Updates for the 2016-2017 Season

In preparation for the upcoming season, the website has undergone a series of updates.  These changes include:

The Schedules will be made current.
The Rules Page has been updated.
The Locations page has been updated.
The Fees, Fines, and Payouts page has been updated to reflect the new fee structere that was voted in at the end of last season.  I will also make a post here reminding everyone of that new structure before the season starts.
The Captain’s List has been made current.
The 2015 Archive has been created in Past Seasons.
All registered players and teams have been updated for the new season.
The Officers have been updated on the Officers page.
The Bullpen has been made current (if you’d like to add your name to the bullpen, please email djmichaelbasic@gmail.com with your full name, email, phone number and if you can play Tuesday, Wednesday, or Both.

Week 14 Results

Check the Tuesday and Wednesday Schedule and Standings pages for all the current league info.

A huge thank you to Cozy Inn 3 who is fully paid on dues.  Unless Cozy 3 uses a new sub between now and the end of the season, they no longer owe any dues.

Now that we are into the second half of the season, any money the new teams pay in is applied to the money they owe, so you’ll start to see those large “Owed Dues” numbers drop.  There are not any teams who owe more than what will be covered by paying $40/week going forward.  That doesn’t mean teams shouldn’t work to pay off what they owe quickly, but as of now, no teams are in danger of owing large sums of money at the end of the season as long as they continue to pay weekly.

Notes from the Captain’s Meeting:

It was voted in that the Pea Rule can now be used twice per half instead of once, so from here on out, each team has the option to Pea twice.  As a reminder, the Pea rule is when, if you only have 3 players, each of your players can play 1 game for the missing 4th player, forfeiting game 16.

I am also still missing the following score sheets (and money):

Tuesday:
Week 12 – Cozy Inn 4 @ Rack & Shack 1 (Rack & Shack Has Sheet)

Wednesday:
Week 9 – Cozy Inn 3 @ Cock & Bull (Cock & Bull Has Sheet)
Week 11 – 90 West 3 @ Cozy Inn 2 (90 West 3 Has Sheet)

Congratulations go out to the following:

Table Run – Joe Pacchanelli (Cozy Inn 1 – Tuesday), Jalantae J3 Johnson (Rack N Shack 1 – Tuesday)

8 Ball Break – Bruce Cleveland (Cozy Inn 1 – Tuesday), Juan Manzo (Cozy Inn 4 – Tuesday), Ben Khoe (90 West 2 – Wednesday)

Honor Roll – Charlie Thun (Lost & Found – Tuesday), Angela Aquino (90 West 4 – Tuesday), Stan Momii (Cozy Inn 4 – Tuesday), Pepe Vasquez (Brennan’s 2 – Tuesday), Dale Kurihara (90 West 2 – Wednesday), Marcus Fair (Gabe’s 1 – Wednesday), Bob Foster (Cozy Inn 2 – Wednesday), Todd Lytle (Gabe’s 3 – Wednesday)

Week 5 Results

Check the Tuesday and Wednesday Schedule and Standings pages for all the current league info.

Notes for this week:  While in BCA it is a rule that a player racks there own balls, there is no such rule in our league.  It has always been the non breaking player who racks the balls for the breaker.  If anyone would like this rule changed, it must, as all rule changes, be brought up at a captain’s meeting or other membership wide event for a vote.

Also, there were some complaints about the new website and how it displays the schedule.  People were confused because it displays Home team first and Away team second.  I changed the schedule so that now one column has both teams and another column has the venue the match is to be played at.  Hopefully that alleviates confusion.

I’d still love to hear feedback on the new website so that I can make any necessary changes to make things easy to read.  Remember that you can click on teams anywhere they are listed and see that teams schedule, standings, and stats.  If you want to see results from an individual match, go to that team’s page, find the match in their results list and click on the score to be taken to a page with detailed event results, including an image of the score sheet and any owed dues info for that night.

Congratulations go out to the following:

Table Run – Dale Kurihara (90 West 4 – Tuesday), Lawrence Weisdorn (Cozy Inn 1 – Tuesday), Darrell McCullough (Scarlet Lady – Wednesday)

8 Ball Break –

Honor Roll – Dale Kurihara (90 West 4 – Tuesday), Stan Momii (Cozy Inn 4 – Tuesday), John Smith (Gabe’s 3 – Wednesday), Mike Shaw (Brennan’s 1 – Wednesday)

Slow site update

Many apologies for not having the website completely ready in time for the start of the season.  I’m in the midst of running a week long event that ends Sunday.  I’ll do my best to get all the week 1 scores in on Monday.

One important thing that hasn’t been updated yet is the rules page.  It was voted in during the captains meeting that all timeouts and any other conversation during a match must be initiated by the shooter.  This means no teammate calling a timeout and no reminding the shooter to call their pocket.

Captain’s Meeting, Tuesday June 16th 7:30pm at 90 West

We will be holding a captain’s meeting next Tuesday, June 16th at 7:30pm at 90 West Lounge.  We will be discussing some minor rule changes, including rules about fees and payments, and a few other pieces of league business.  If you have anything you want discussed, please be prepared to speak next Tuesday.

Please RSVP to Arnold at acastellanos@mwdh2o.com so we know how many people to expect.  If you can’t make it but would like to voice anything, let us know so we can bring it up on your behalf.

Rule Correction

Please note that in Rule 8, Choice Of Group, the line:

Note that if a player has an open table and pockets one (or more) of each group of balls, the table remains open.

was erroneously left in even though we moved to a call pocket ruleset.  This line has now been deleted on the rules page, and should not be enforced.  As we now play call pocket, it is not permissible to call 2 balls on one shot, thus, the only ball that counts is the one called.

Week 22 Results Have Been Posted

The Scoresheet from the Wednesday Match between Cozy Inn 3 and 90 West 3 was not sent to me this week, therefor those scores have not been updated.

I’m also missing the score sheet and money from the Tuesday Week 20 (2/24/15) match between Gabe’s 2 and Cozy 2.  Cozy 2 was the visiting team – thus responsible for turning in the sheet and money.

Remember – Rule 21 states:

21. No new players can be added during the last 6 weeks of the league season . (Only substitutes listed on the official team roster, submitted by the season’s deadline, or ‘bull pen’ can play). Exceptions can be made only in extenuating circumstances, (i.e. Family emergency) to be judged for validity by the Rules/Grievance Committee.

Keep this in mind…from here on out, you may only use bullpen subs or subs you’ve already used.

There are still quite a few teams who owe money.  Now is the time to get paid up.  We don’t want to have to fine anybody at the end of the season for delinquent dues.  Please check the SHORT LIST to see what you owe!

Teams that currently owe money are:

Scarlet Lady, Speakeasy 2, Cozy Inn 1, Cozy Inn 2, 90 West 1, 90 West 2, 90 West 3, Cozy Inn 3, JPs, and Speakeasy 5.

Click the Schedule and Standings link to see all the stats from this weeks matches.

Congratulations go out to the following:

Table Run – Perry Simnoski (Speakeasy 5 – Wednesday)

8 Ball Break – Tyler Lemen (Gabes 2 – Tuesday)

Honor Roll – Lawrence Weisdorn (Cozy Inn 1 – Tuesday), Gip Gipson (Speakeasy 1 – Wednesday), Harry Young (Speakeasy 1 – Wednesday), Darrell McCullough (Speakeasy 1 – Wednesday), Oswald Colunga (90 West 2 – Wednesday), Colin Angle (90 West 2 – Wednesday), Angela Aquino (90 West 2 – Wednesday)

Captain’s Meeting – Tuesday December 16th

Arnold would like to hold a captain’s meeting next Tuesday, December 16th at 90 West at 7pm.  Everyone is welcomed, captains and players alike.  There will be a game of “tree strikes u’r out” (you’ll have to ask Arnold what that is) before the meeting and a tournament after.
